In the room, on the road: Sweet-smelling success

5:30 pm: The newsroom at Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC). Loud noises filled up the air. Continuous phone calls, relentless typing on laptops, people asking each other in raised but indistinct voices. Reporters, a hundred of them, seemed equally tense.

And then, all was calm, all was quiet, although only for short seconds.

A one-minute countdown announcement caught everyone’s attention. As the minute winded down, journalists began to either look at each other in utter frustration or desperately rush through their backpacks for pen and paper. It was only 5:40pm, 25 minutes before the scheduled liftoff time.

3, 2, 1, fire, and...there was no fire. All looked puzzled for a brief second before laughter burst out in the room. Why, it was only a simulated ignition.

By the actual time of liftoff, the crowd had managed to retain their excitement. Every public announcement of the satellite’s progress sounded like music to the ears, and was accompanied with short moments of joy.

Not yet – not yet time to celebrate. Over and over, the reporters were informed by concerned-looking scientists that it’s a complicated mission, and a successful liftoff signifies only an initial fraction of triumph. Everyone expected hoorays, but they required time, time for Chang’e I to separate from its carrier rocket, to enter into orbit, and to unfold its solar panel.

Reporters didn’t truly understand what they meant, but the space scientists had every reason to be patient. This was mankind’s 124th lunar probe attempt, China’s first; only 58 of the previous 123 have so far succeeded.

The room fell silent again, with all eyes on the three giant screens in the newsroom, telecasting CCTV's live coverage of the event and real-time updates from the Xichang launch center.

It felt long before Xichang center director Li Shangfu came on stage and announced the satellite launch a success. Suddenly, Beijing's chilly autumn night gave in to the warmth of joy. Chang'e had hugged us all good night.
